In and around New York

Oxymoron: Virtuous Cupcake

July 29, 2010

If I told you these little beauties were healthy, you probably wouldn’t believe me. Hell, I wouldn’t believe me. And I suppose they aren’t “healthy” in a macrobiotic way but for a cupcake, wowsa.

I am on the hunt to try all the cupcakes in New York, and these are from the vegan Babycakes bakery in the Lower East Side. They are made with spelt flour, agave syrup and there are heaps of different flavours. If you think about it, you could almost eat these for breakfast…. Whilst they don’t taste like your average run of the mill cupcake they are still dang good for something that is free for milk, butter and eggs which are the basics of what makes a good cupcake. And good frosting for that matter.

Ode to my Worishofers

July 28, 2010

Walkin’, walkin’, walkin’. That’s what I have been doing the most of since I got to NYC and by gum do my feet feel it. At the end of most days I was feeling like an old Chinese lady that had had her feet bound. And it’s not like I didn’t try and ease the pain through conscientious application of band aids and a scheduled rotation of shoes but all I ended up with was blisters blisters blisters. (Excuse my use of repetition on certain words, but I would really like to *emphasise* the point). “What can I do ?!” I cried out in vain to an empty loft space but, oh golly, have I found the answer.

Exhibit A: My new shoes.

Actually pronounced “wer-sher-fer” (though I still say woris-hoffer) they are supposed to be some sort of bunion/orthopedic/old European lady shoe, but in Williamsburg they have become *huge*. I was teetering on the brink of buying a pair of Crocs, so it’s really quite fateful that I discovered these before I swan dived off the precipice into who knows what else in the name of comfort.

At $55 bucks a pop, you can get why they have become popular, especially as they have expanded in to a myriad of styles and colours due to their new found cult status. I earned the nickname Snookie because I chose leopard print, and much to my brothers disdain I plan to invest in another pair.

Here is a Haiku I created:

Deep and meaningful bond/ Protecting me like Superman/ Joining style and flair.

At the John Lennon Memorial, Strawberry Fields, in Central Park. Right opposite the Dakota apartment building where he was shot 30 years ago…..

Check out an article on the development of their popularity, and the celebrities that are wearing them here.

“Garcia smoked sausage welcomes King James to Miami”

The most common form of advertising in Miami is through banner’s like this. They run up South Beach all day long and advertise everything from windsurfing to different parties that night. This one was a day after the announcement that LeBron James signed to the Miami Heat for $110 million. IN-sane.

Does your dentist look like this?

Americans at play. I think Australians look at the beach almost like going to the gym, you pop down for a few hours, go for a bit of a swim and chill out. Whatever. Americans go all out however. They set up their chairs, drag along an esky full of refreshments and generally holler at each other a lot.

Yesterday my brother introduced me to this hidden gallery and cafe, which I had walked past on several occasions, and had never realised it existed. The Neue Gallery (pronounced ‘noy’) is on the corner of Fifth and East 86th (opposite Central Park) and represents a mix of German and Austrian art, especially the Neue movement. The movement started in Germany in the 1920′s and was all about realism and a rejection of romantic expression (I imagine because it was during the struggle of the Weimar Republic). The gallery has a huge variety however, including everything from Kandisky, to Wagner and Klimt and also an awesome bookshop to go along with it.

Alex and I spent the whole time in the attached Cafe Sabarsky which has a German and Austrian  theme on the menu . What’s really cool about this place is that it is beautiful, quiet, fairly casual but still classy which is a pretty unique and unusual mix.

As you can see if you look past my brother’s glaring face, its all dark wood, black chairs and plush banquettes. There was even beautiful background classical music to tie it all together.

Whilst Al went all out with a Schnitzel and wine at 4:3o in the afternoon, I just stuck to a smoked salmon sandwich and sacher torte. This is him finishing off my torte, including a whole pile of whipped cream that was next to it. (Some things never change even after 15 odd years, and a move to the other side of the world)

the city never sleeps, better slip you an ambien.

New York, NYC, the empire state, or just “the city”. What ever its referred to, we all know it’s arguably the epicenter of the whole planet. Right now it’s mostly hot, sweaty, heaving with noise and the dull thud of people running about with scarily serious purpose.

I thought I would start writing on this b-log so I would be easily able to show people what I’m up to whilst I’m away, possibly share tips on things that I have discovered and give me something constructive to do. Sadly I have already started consuming inhuman amounts of oreos in the middle of the day, so this last point is actually quite important for my well being.

I have a budget of $35 dollars a day which I (mostly) manage to stick to so everything I’m doing is usually quite cheap -o. I am now currently staying in Williamsburg with my bro which involves hanging out in a loft space with other artistes, discussing the benefits of veganism and then going to do some yoga. Most surprisingly I’m actually managing to do this quite well. I’ll update on my shenanigans in Boston and Miami verrrrrry soon.
